Message from the Vice-Principal
I can’t believe that it’s the end of February already! We have enjoyed another busy month of teaching and learning here at Garibaldi. I want to thank you for your support in making Garibaldi school such a warm and active community. Thank you to everyone who has given their time to attend field trips and classroom activities. Thanks to the hard work and fundraising of the PAC we enjoyed the Gymsense program at the start of February and in the Spring Term we are looking forward to a Musewest performance, science workshops and a sexual health education program for parents and students.
On Wednesday 24th February, our school was a sea of pink as we participated in Pink Shirt Day. In our Pink Day assembly, we learned about how to recognize bullying and how to be a ‘helpful bystander’ if we see or hear someone being bullied. Research shows that if a peer tells a student that their behavior is unacceptable then this has a greater impact than if an adult intervenes. Therefore it is important that we teach children:
How to recognize bullying behaviour
How to speak assertively but respectfully to the bully if they feel safe to do so
When it is time to get help from a trusted adult.
Of course, Pink Day is not the only day of the year that we talk about how to make our school a safe and welcoming place for everyone in our school community and we refer regularly to our school code of conduct.
At the end of the assembly, we also performed the Pink Day Acceptance dance one final time. If you would like to see the Pink Day Dance at the Giants game, it can be found here.
